Discovering Iceland: An Action-Packed Family Adventure

Iceland had been on my travel bucket list for a long time, and this trip did not disappoint! My cousins, friends, and I booked our flights with Icelandair, which provided a smooth and comfortable journey. From the moment we landed, our itinerary was packed with adventure, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable experiences.

Katla Ice Cave and Super Jeep Tour

Exploring the Katla Ice Cave was an otherworldly experience. We hopped into a massive Super Jeep that took us across Iceland’s rugged terrain to reach the stunning ice cave. Walking through the blue and black ice formations felt like stepping into a scene from a fantasy movie.

Sólheimajökull Guided Glacier Hike

Strapping on crampons and trekking across the Sólheimajökull glacier was exhilarating! Our guide taught us about the glacier’s formation and changes over time. The views were breathtaking, and it was incredible to walk on ancient ice.

Reykjavík Magic Ice Bar

The Magic Ice Bar in Reykjavík was such a fun and unique experience! Everything inside was made of ice, including the glasses we drank from. The atmosphere was electric, and it was a great way to kick off a night in the city.

Eimverk Distillery Guided Tour with Tasting

For anyone who enjoys a good drink, the Eimverk Distillery tour is a must. We learned about Icelandic spirits, including their unique gin and whisky, and, of course, sampled some fantastic drinks. The tour was informative and delicious!

Reykjavík FlyOver Iceland Tour

This was a thrilling way to see Iceland from a whole new perspective. The FlyOver Iceland experience simulates flying over Iceland’s stunning landscapes, complete with wind effects and scents. It felt like we were soaring over waterfalls, volcanoes, and glaciers.

Sky Lagoon with 7-Step Spa Ritual

One of the most relaxing experiences of the trip was visiting the Sky Lagoon. The 7-step spa ritual, which includes a cold plunge, sauna, and body scrub, left us feeling refreshed and rejuvenated while enjoying stunning ocean views.

Blue Lagoon Restaurant

A visit to Iceland wouldn’t be complete without stopping at the Blue Lagoon. We dined at the Blue Lagoon Restaurant. The food was exceptional, and dining with a view of the lagoon made it even more special.

Black Sand Beach & Reynisfjara Beach

These beaches were absolutely mesmerizing with their jet-black volcanic sand and dramatic basalt columns. We took so many amazing photos and enjoyed the raw beauty of Iceland’s coastline.

Black Crust Pizza

One of the coolest meals we had was black crust pizza! The unique color comes from volcanic ash, and it tasted just as amazing as it looked. I had the Spicy Tuna Pizza and was pleasantly surprised!

The Bridge Between Two Continents

Standing between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates was such a surreal experience. It’s incredible to think about how these two massive landmasses are slowly drifting apart! I was able to run to one side and touch one plate, and then run to the other and touch the other. Which was super cool!

Pufa Hill

This small hill in Reykjavík provided a peaceful escape with great views of the city. It’s an easy walk and a nice spot to take in Iceland’s unique landscapes. Once we got to the top, my cousin warned us of a distinct smell and he was surely right.... the smell of drying fish waited for us at the top!

Reykjanesbær Hafnir Beach

A beautiful coastal area with stunning ocean views. It was the perfect place to take a stroll and enjoy Iceland’s natural beauty.

Grindavík Lava Area

Seeing the effects of recent volcanic activity was both humbling and awe-inspiring. The lava fields stretched as far as the eye could see, showcasing the raw power of nature. There were even newly constructed roads over where the lava had reciently hardened!

Valdís Ice Cream in Reykjavík

Even in Iceland’s cooler weather, we couldn’t resist stopping for ice cream at Valdís! They had some of the most unique flavors we’d ever tried, making it a delicious stop.

Seeing the Northern Lights

One of the biggest highlights of the trip was witnessing the Northern Lights dance across the sky. Seeing the vibrant greens and purples shimmer above us was truly magical and something I’ll never forget. My cousins and friends dragged me out of bed to see it, and I am surely glad they did!

Bláskógabyggð Waterfall

This stunning waterfall was an unforgettable sight. The cascading water and surrounding landscapes were picture-perfect, making it a fantastic stop on our journey.

Giganta’s Cave

A fun and quirky stop, Giganta’s Cave is a hidden gem that adds a touch of Icelandic folklore to the trip. It was a fun place to explore and snap some playful pictures. A great spot for kids!

Icelandic Cuisine: A Taste of Tradition

No trip to Iceland is complete without trying some of its traditional dishes. We were adventurous with our food choices and tried puffin, which had a rich, gamey fla

vor, and dung-smoked salmon, which had a distinct smoky taste from the traditional smoking method. Other must-try Icelandic dishes include fermented shark, lamb stew, and Skyr, a deliciously thick Icelandic yogurt. The food was as unique as the landscapes, making every meal an adventure in itself!

Final Thoughts

Our trip to Iceland was one for the books—filled with adventure, breathtaking scenery, great food, and unforgettable memories with family and friends. Whether you're looking for thrilling outdoor experiences, relaxing geothermal spas, or unique cultural stops, Iceland has something for everyone. If you’re considering a trip, I highly recommend packing your itinerary with as many activities as possible because every moment here is truly magical!
